Tsukaremashta I really don't know what to wear. I usually just stick with whatever one has the better stats. Is this wise?You're a BM hunter, so you really shouldn't be getting hit all that much.
That being said, there's not that many things that can hurt you that much
when your armor is leather compared to mail (especially if it's a few pieces).
Leather is fine to use if it gives you better stats.

You should try and level all three so that you can safely use a different type if it's an upgrade to your current one (Only problem is changing ammo bag/quiver and ammunition type)
